The Brown Pelicans around the Palafox Pier in downtown Pensacola are so civilized you can walk right up to them and take their picture … at least until they get tired of the noise of the clicking shutter and bug off to another part of the pier.

Catalpa
Hurricane Ivan knocked this tree down completely ten years ago. But it came back. Today it’s more than 25 feet tall, and every spring it gives me these luscious clusters of delicate blossoms.
Electric Gull Gathering
Labor Day at Opal Beach. The tourists were feeding the gulls, and the gulls were very happy about it.
Just a Bunch of Skimmers
My passion for the birds of Opal Beach continues. These guys just love the puddles left by all the rain and have commandeered their own parking lot. Skimmers, Gulls, Least Terns, and all their fledglings call this place home.
Least Tern Triptych
A new twist on my “Escapes” technique. This is the first one using multiple frames.
I’m writing a “how-I-did-it” now and will post it here soon.
Crystal Clear Gulf of Mexico
It’s not often you see the water this clear and this beautiful. And almost bath tub calm, all the way out to the third sandbar. Perfect temperature, soft breeze … overall I’d have to say “Not a Bad Day.”
Japanese Iris
The yard’s full of them right now
Beach Panorama
Just playing with the iPhone Pano feature. It’s hard to keep the horizon line straight. But this view is almost 180 degrees – looking east toward Navarre and west toward Pensacola Beach. I was actually standing with my toes in the surf.
Gulf Fritillary laying eggs
I wasn’t sure why she was hanging upside down, until I zoomed and realized she was laying eggs on the Passion flower vine.
Ain’t nature strange?
Pelican Escape
I usually do these “Escapes” with flowers. But this guy seemed to just be begging for the escape treatment. So here he is.
